Developed by Kia R & D Europe , this hybrid powertrain using lead - carbon battery voltage to drive a 48 volt electric motor to increase the power of the engine and reduces emissions at the tailpipe .
Lead- carbon battery charge chosen because it does not require active cooling and more easily recycled if it is not used . Other advantages of this battery can function more efficiently under conditions of cold temperatures below zero degrees .
With this system , the driver can drive a Kia car using only electric power in low speed and the battery is recharged automatically during deceleration or braking . Stop-start feature also helps conserve fuel in heavy traffic conditions .
The battery also supplies power to an electric supercharger that increases the power and torque at low engine speeds . With this system, Kia is targeting CO2 emissions reduced by 15 % and the supercharger produces 15-20 % more power
